Below is a collection of larger text samples from various sources. Unfortunately, we do not have a lot, so we treasure what little we have. Suggestions for more materials are welcome!
This is the narrow-screen version, more suitable for tablets and cellphone screens. For the wide-screen display mode, see the wide text index instead.
Each text is displayed on a separate page, as a vertical list of text items. Each item has tree optional display parts, in top to bottom order: the romanized Quenya text, including the text item number (used for reference), the same Quenya text written in tengwar, and the translation text. Clicking (or tapping) on the tengwar text will show/hide the romanized text, clicking on the romanized text will show the translations, and clicking the translation will hide it again. There are also buttons at the top of the page to toggle the display for all text items at once.
Some texts are split up into a main page and other pages below it; the main text will show a list of links to the subordinate pages. At the bottom of the text there may be Prior/Up/Next links, for: the preceding text page, the main text page this one is below, and the following text page.
The sample texts also come up in a different form: when you click a “Search in sample texts” link at the bottom of one of the Quenya word pages, it will take you to a page listing the specific sample text sentences containing that word, with that word highlighted in the text. The search result pages are always in wide-screen format.
If you want to see the sample texts in a different tengwar font, please use the “narrow“ links on the font samples page.
In the table on contents below, click on a column titles to sort by that column, twice to reverse. Sorting is cumulative, later sort takes precedence. Click on the chapter count to expand or collapse the chapter link list of a sample.
The columns show, in this order, the following information: the primary illustration (if any), the audio track count (voice recordings of the text), whether there are secondary translations for the text, whether the text has a word-aligned view with lexical analysis, the total count of Quenya words, the same count without duplicates, the count of numbered text items, the number of chapters (click to expand), and the top-level title.
If this page loads too slowly, try using the plain index instead.
